Chairs are often over looked, but why not make them a part of your space!

Chairs give us comfort and they make it easier to do certain activities, such as eat and browse the internet. But chairs can do a lot more than just give us seating; they are also a great way to bring in some style and flair. Why not bring in your favorite designs and materials with an awesome arm chair or lounge?

Why don’t we usually care about the chairs we sit in? Probably because there is nothing special about them and just seem to be tools that get you through the day. However, unique and interesting chairs can really make your room pop and make a statement!

The above chair is great because it brings in traditional features with contemporary touches. Add something like this to a traditional space to feel more modern and updated without straying too far from the traditional vibe. Or add it to a very modern space for a grounded feel. Another way to make a traditional room feel more updated is to reupholster the chairs and sofas in modern looking fabrics or bright colors.

Cool looking chairs can also be used as a conversation piece. It could be a chair brought back from traveling or just something you picked up at a local store. These chairs would not necessarily be for seating but rather for look and feel. They can also be actual functional pieces of furniture (other than to sit in) like this picture above. There is no reason why armchairs can’t be a way to store knickknacks or books. This specific chair can be wheeled around anywhere with ease! Put it in the living room or office to make a statement.

Chairs can be anything you want them to be! Above, this armchair is doubling as ambient lighting. It could be a terrific way to have a night light for kids or to light up an area that is extremely dark at night. This kind of chair could blend its way into modern and traditional areas as well. The pattern is more traditional while the design is more contemporary. There are many other styles and shapes of this kind of lighted chair as well. Just look around!

Create a unique and fresh feel to your outdoor space with this rounded lounge chair. It is contemporary in design yet it looks inviting to sit in, a wonderful combination when trying to get that modern look. The rattan adds texture to the space and it also makes the space feel warmer.

This chaise is a perfect way to add comfort as well as style, which sometimes don’t go together as one. Some people may sacrifice one for the other but there is no reason why you can’t have both!

There is no reason why chairs can’t be cool and cozy! You just have to find the right one for you.

Is your bedroom lacking pizzazz? Are you feeling board? A few changes can always fix that. Here are some affordable bedroom makeover tips that will uplift and shake up your bedroom for little to nothing.

Organize everything! Sometimes putting everything in its place is just what a room needs to feel alive again. Organizing can do wonders and after this step, you may not even feel like you need to do anything else! When things are cluttered it makes your life feel cluttered too. It can also make you feel restless and uneasy in your room that is supposed to be for relaxing. Go through your things and throw away anything you can. This will make it easier later when you organize the rest. Then pick out what you want to keep out and what you want stored away. The things you keep out should be pictures, sentimental items, and other things that you like. The things you store can be anything you don’t want to see all the time or anything you don’t have room for. Remember, organizing will cost you little to no money!

The main focus of your bedroom is your bed, so switching your sheets, bed spread, or duvet covers to something new and bright would bring a whole new life to your room. However, you don’t have to always use bright colors to make a statement. Having stripes or a wild pattern in muted tones would be just as bold. Another inexpensive way to spruce up your bedroom is to get a few throw pillows that are of bold patterns and prints. Drapes are another wonderful and inexpensive way to bring color into your room. This is an area, instead of your bed, where you can bring in a unique pattern. Ceiling to floor window treatments will also help the room feel taller!

Paint can do wonders when you want a big transformation in your bedroom. Paint is the ultimate way to set the mood for your room. If you want your bedroom to be relaxing, a cool blue like (Dunn Edwards #DE5743 Silver Spruce) or (Benjamin Moore #AF-415 Grasshopper) soft green would do the trick. If you want your room to feel cozy and warm, a mid-tone chocolate or rust will be the right touch to make your bedroom inviting. You don’t have to go all out with the paint, though. Another way to have a pop in your room is to paint just an accent wall a different color than the others. This way if you want a really outrageous color, you won’t overwhelm the room with it. Ideally your wall of color should be a focal wall for example the wall your bed is on or a wall with a large picture window. One gallon of paint is usually around $30!

Other ways to create a feeling of a new room is to add embellishments to things that you already own. Add some beaded fringe to lamp shades or change out your old drawer pulls with new ones that are glass or in a bright color. These would only be a few dollars each. Switching your lamp shades for new ones is another great way to add some spice into your space and incorporate. Remember to be creative with your changes and do something that you love!

It’s back to school time again! Children all over the nation are ending summer and starting a new school year. Many, of which, will be starting college. Entering into college is an exciting and scary time for teenagers especially if they are going to move out and live on campus. The dorms there are usually very small and boxy and it might be hard not to be homesick in such a sterile place lacking of any style and COLOR. Luckily, there are many tips and tricks you can do to make your small space a great living area, even if it isn’t a dorm!

There is very little storage in dorm rooms so it is best not to bring everything you have ever loved. Remember to go through your things before packing them and to only bring what is really important. The favorite things you do decide to bring should comfort you, just in case you find yourself longing for home. These can be pictures of places you have traveled to with your family, a quilt that your grandmother made you, or just some object that reminds you of your home or hometown. If you need more storage, and have room for it, get smaller items that can be used at least 2 ways. It could be an ottoman with removable lid and storage inside it or a mini fridge used as an end table or TV/game stand. Make sure these pieces that you bring in are not too large because that will make the room feel overwhelming. Another way to increase storage is to put bed risers under the posts of your bed. This will let you have tons more storage than you would have previously.

Dorm rooms usually come with furniture that is the same throughout every single room. So to make the clone furniture more your own, you need to use duvets, sheets, and pillows that you like and that represent you. The fabrics should be your best friend here because they can be the difference of it being a room or your room. It also will make it a cozy space for you to enjoy and, of course, do homework. Decorating the walls with nonpermanent items can really transform the room into your personal space. It could be maps of where you want to travel to, a cork board for important papers and pictures, or even a large mirror or a few smaller mirrors that will make the space feel bigger.

The lighting is typically fluorescent in dorms, which is anything but flattering. To bring in some more warm toned lights, have a few table or floor lamps around the room that you can turn on easily. For extra space saving, you can hang lights on the wall or ceiling in areas that will be benefitted by the extra light. This will really warm it up and make it feel like a place you can see yourself living in for four years. Another way to liven up your room is to actually have living plants in there. They will soften up the corners of the room and make it very inviting to come into. If you feel like plants are too much responsibility then faux ones will do just as well.

To make the space feel bigger you can add drapes that go from the floor to ceiling. This will help elongate the wall and make the ceiling feel higher than it really is. This may not work as well if you are going to have furniture underneath the window, but it is still nice to have some kind of window treatment on the windows for privacy and light control. Furniture arrangement will also help to make your room feel larger. Try to create different areas for different activities like a studying area near the window or area with a lot of light, a sleeping area where it’s the darkest and least noisy, and, if you have the space, a lounging area to hang out with friends and have fun is always a good idea. Have some rugs to separate the areas into their own spaces and you will have the most stylish room in town!

A powerful cleaning appliance for your home that removes dirt and kills 99.9% of harmful germs without the use of chemicals

The ionator HOM
A powerful cleaning appliance for your home that removes dirt and kills 99.9% of harmful germs without the use of chemicals

Why Green Irene Loves This Product For Your Home

3 words…Simple. Smart. Sustainable. The ionator HOM is a powerful appliance that cleans without chemicals, so it’s good for people and the planet. The ionator HOM converts ordinary tap water into ionized water, which is a dirt-removing, bacteria-killing agent. Truly, I’ve seen this work with my own eyes, and we have studied the independent test results. It’s such a cool-looking handheld appliance that the whole family will want to help with cleaning! Here’s how it works:

Water can take many forms depending on how you treat it. Freeze it and it becomes ice. Heat it and it becomes steam. Now, the ionator HOM uses ingenious technology to give water a tiny electrical charge. The water then becomes ionized, which makes it a powerful cleaner and sanitizer. The technology driving the ionator products has been used for decades in food processing plants, four-star restaurants, and large hotels.

Since it’s just water, you can spray it where your kids and pets eat. You can even spray a pacifier or fruit, and you can spray your kids too!

It won’t replace every cleaner in your house; you’ll need some cleaners for the toughest cleaning jobs, but it’s great for everyday cleaning and sanitizing. It will definitely free up some space in your cleaning supply cabinet.

You heard it from me first…just like every home has a vacuum cleaner, every home will have an ionator HOM.

We also carry a heavier duty ionator EXP for commercial use in places like offices, restaurants, schools and gyms.

Sustainably Yours,

Your Local Green Irene Eco-Consultant

P.S.: I love that it’s endorsed by Bill Nye, The Science Guy
What are the Benefits of the ionator HOM?

Environmental: From kitchens and bathrooms, to bedrooms and playrooms — you can clean them all without leaving behind any chemical residue. The ionized tap water cleans without chemicals and is harmless to people and the environment. The ionator hates dirt, loves people. Plus, you eliminate the enormous packaging waste from using general purpose cleaning chemicals.

Personal Health: Virtually the only cleaning and sanitizing product in the world without a chemical-related health warning label! 40% of calls to US Poison Control Center are related to ingestion of cleaning chemicals. When used as directed the ionator kills or removes more than 99.9% of harmful germs without the use of chemicals, including H1N1 virus, E-Coli, and Staph.

Savings: Eliminates the repeated expense of buying general purpose cleaning chemicals, saving hundreds of dollars each year.

Quality: Independent cleaning test results demonstrate that Activeion technology is as effective as popular chemical cleaners for cleaning multiple surfaces. Sanitizing occurs in 6 seconds, versus 10 minutes for leading concentrated commercial cleaners.
How Does it Work?

Come On, Does It Really Work?: YES! When the trigger on the ionator HOM is pressed, the tap water flows into a water cell where a slight electrical charge is applied to the water. The charged water then passes through an ion exchange membrane to create an oxygen-rich mixture of positive and negative “nano-bubbles.” When applied to surfaces, this ionized water attracts dirt like a magnet helping to lift it from the surface and allowing it to be wiped away. The ionized water returns to its natural state after 30-45 seconds.

Do’s: It’s designed for quick and easy cleaning around your home, in your car, or at your office. Use it to clean glass, stainless steel, natural stone (such as granite or marble), tubs, showers, sinks, finished wood floors and surfaces, carpet spots, fabrics, and more. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being a cleaning job that requires the strongest cleaning agents available, this product is good for cleaning jobs rated 1-7. Best used with Green Irene microfiber cleaning cloths.

Don’ts: Does NOT work well on synthetic oil, such as car oil on garage floor. Do not use distilled or purified water, as the ionator technology requires some mineral content in the water to function properly (the hardness or softness of the water does not matter). Do not add scent or anything other than tap water. Do not used on unfinished porous surfaces.

Directions for Use: After charging the battery, fill the reservoir with plain tap water and squeeze the trigger to spray the surface to be cleaned. Wipe surface dry with a clean microfiber cloth. As you squeeze the trigger, a green light in the reservoir indicates that the device is working properly. For sanitizing, spray surface for 6 seconds at a distance of 3 to 4 inches (do not spray the cloth).

Click to view slideshow. Are you still missing something on your walls? With Kirkland’s new stretched canvas prints you can transform your home into a gallery of art!

Kirkland’s has brought on some fabulous canvas art? Or properly called Giclée (pronounced gee-clay) the image is taken from an original oil painting preserving the rich color attainable only from oil. Giclée is created by a sophisticated print-making process in which images are generated using high resolution scans from original oil paintings, and printed with patented quality inks. The quality of the Giclée is the Rolls Royce of the industry as compared to lithographic prints commonly found in the market. It’s exciting to see beautiful affordable art that can be mixed in with - pieces to creat an overall luxury look.

Another cool note is the giclée has a UV protective sealer; however, as with all fine art and decorative home pieces, it should not be placed in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Using unframed canvas prints, gives a room a casual sophistication and they are so easy to hang especially with the new 3M command wall strips for damage free hanging. The Shaping Spaces Group love using those strips, makes picture hanging so easy.

When grouping prints try something new and unique other than the most common (two or three in a row). Try grouping different size prints together; by keeping the spacing between the prints uniform 3-5 inches apart depending on wall space makes the pictures or frames feel connected without having the same content but maybe the same color pallet.

The canvas prints can also be framed to jazz them up and feel even more luxurious. Your friends will have to get real close to know if it’s real oil or a print.

Have you used any of the canvas prints in your decor? If so please share your most successful grouping or what was your challenge?

Happy Decorating!

Whether you are a homeowner, realtor, or builder; Shaping Spaces Group is your home staging and design partner working together to get your home or listing SOLD.

You would think a vacant home would be easy to sell, with no clutter, furniture or personal belongings to distract. The reality is, it’s the opposite. A vacant home has no place for the eye to rest, no place to allow buyers to make an emotional connection and often feel cold and uninviting no matter how beautiful or grand the home can be.

I just have to ask if you have seen the new Pantone color choice for 2011. Yes, everyone is it Hot Pink; I even heard it called watermelon Pink. The Pantone color if Honeysuckle #18-2120.

Do you love it? They say, “Turquoise of 2010 served as a dreamy escape for many but Honeysuckle empowers us to face everyday troubles with vigor and uplift our spirits to meet the challenges that have become part of everyday lives”. Really, wow I had no idea this reddish pink could do all that. Don’t get me wrong it is a beautiful color but, really?

Bold pink can be a great accent, but I hope it’s kept under control by those who decide to step out of the box with this fresh vibrant color. By knowing that adjusting the shade of pink or the coordinating colors can make for a harmonious space or a disastrous one.

Check out Sherwin Williams Global Garden collection of beautiful colors to pair with pink.

What are your thoughts on this power house pink to set the tone for all things design in 2011?

Hope you all have a stylish and fabulous New Year!
